Nigeria in 2024: A Year of Tragedies and Loss

WRITTEN BY DAMILOLA ADELEKE

The year 2024 will be remembered as a period of profound tragedy for Nigeria, with numerous events resulting in the loss of hundreds of lives across the country. From stampedes during food and gift distribution to road accidents and explosions, the devastating toll on human lives reflects the dire socio-economic challenges faced by the nation.

Stampedes During Food Distribution

A series of stampedes occurred in various states during food and palliative distributions, leaving scores dead and many injured:

Ibadan, Oyo State: The most tragic incident occurred at a children’s Christmas party on December 18, where 35 children lost their lives.

Maitama, Abuja: On December 21, a stampede at Holy Trinity Catholic Church resulted in 10 deaths, including seven children, during a food distribution event.

Okija, Anambra State: On the same day, another stampede claimed 22 lives during a charity event.

Lagos State: In March, seven people died in a stampede while trying to purchase subsidized rice from the Nigeria Customs Service.

Nasarawa State: Seven students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, lost their lives during a stampede at a government palliative distribution site on March 22.

Bauchi State: Four people died during a zakat (almsgiving) exercise on March 24, while a 17-year-old girl sustained injuries.

Tragic Road Accidents

Road accidents also took a heavy toll in 2024:

Kaduna State: In September, a road accident claimed the lives of 36 Muslim worshippers traveling for Eid-el-Maulud celebrations.

Plateau State: On October 22, five Nigerian Air Force personnel died in a crash on the Jos-Akwanga Express Road while en route to a sports event.

Explosions and Fire Disasters

Explosions were another major cause of loss in 2024:

Jigawa State: On October 15, a fuel tanker explosion killed 105 people and injured 55 others. The tragedy occurred as locals attempted to scoop fuel from the tanker.

Ibadan, Oyo State: A tragic explosion in the Bodija area on January 16 claimed lives and destroyed properties.

A Nation in Grief

These events highlight the urgent need for improved safety measures, socio-economic reforms, and disaster preparedness to prevent future tragedies. The recurring stampedes during food distributions underscore the worsening poverty and desperation among Nigerians. Moreover, the road accidents and explosions call for stricter regulations and better infrastructure to safeguard lives.
