Nigeria deploys AI platform to revolutionise TB, HIV Programmes

Abuja, Nigeria: Nigeria has officially launched a cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform aimed at enhancing the country’s tuberculosis (TB) and HIV programmes across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), marking a major milestone in its digital health transformation.

This initiative represents the largest deployment of a digital health system in Nigeria’s history, with the platform now operational in more than 5,300 healthcare facilities. The system was formally introduced at a high-level roundtable event held in Abuja, where stakeholders highlighted its early successes in improving healthcare delivery.

Developed by the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), in collaboration with Vantage Health Technologies and the Network for Health Equity and Development (NHED), the AI platform offers real-time data analytics, streamlined reporting, and enhanced decision-making capabilities for frontline health workers.

Among the key achievements since its rollout are a 65% reduction in the time required for monthly programme reviews, full compliance with national reporting standards, and real-time monitoring of over 10,600 performance indicators. Thousands of data-driven feedback loops have also been generated, fostering continuous improvement in service delivery.

Dr. Emmanuel Vincent, Project Director of IHVN’s Global Fund-supported TB/HIV programme, hailed the innovation as a “quantum leap” in healthcare delivery. “This is not just another dashboard—it’s an action engine. It helps teams identify and close critical gaps rapidly, enabling measurable outcomes,” he stated.

Paul Bhuhi, Managing Director of Vantage Health Technologies, emphasized the practical impact of the technology. “The real value comes when health workers can access real-time data to make faster, smarter decisions. This platform empowers them at the point of care,” he said.

Dr. Jerome Mafeni, Lead Technical Advisor at NHED, underscored the platform’s role in strengthening frontline supervision. “We’ve seen a cultural shift—greater accountability and proactive problem-solving are becoming the norm,” he noted.

Looking ahead, the Federal Government is considering expanding the AI-driven approach to other sectors such as malaria control, maternal health, and education. According to Akubo Adegbe, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Delivery and Coordination, strategic plans are already in motion.

Dr. Adebobola Bashorun of the National AIDS & STIs Control Programme (NASCP) called for a cohesive national framework to replicate and scale up similar innovations across the health sector.

With this groundbreaking AI system, Nigeria is setting a new standard for data-driven healthcare, illustrating the transformative potential of digital tools when combined with robust local partnerships and strong institutional commitment.
