Onyinyechi Mark secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics with a record-breaking lift of 147kg in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category. Her remarkable performance not only earned her the gold but also set a new world record.
Sports Minister Senator John Owan Enoh, who was present for the occasion, praised Mark’s achievement. “This is an outstanding moment for Nigeria! Onyinyechi Mark has made us proud with her gold medal victory here in Paris,” Enoh said. He further noted, “The nation is celebrating your success on social media. Congratulations on your incredible accomplishment; we are immensely proud of you.”
The 23-year-old athlete triumphed over China’s Cui Jianjin, who won the silver with a 140kg lift, and Mexico’s Amelia Perez, who claimed the bronze with 130kg. Mark’s lift not only secured her victory but also surpassed the previous world record set by Nigerian competitor Lucy Ejike, marking a significant milestone for Team Nigeria.
Before Mark’s gold medal win, Nigeria had already earned a bronze in para-badminton and a silver in para-powerlifting. The team remains optimistic and is gearing up for upcoming para-powerlifting events with hopes of adding more medals to their tally.
