Nigeria and South Africa Call for Ceasefire in Sudan

Nigeria and South Africa have jointly called for an immediate ceasefire to halt the ongoing conflict in Sudan.

Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, and Ronald Lamola, South Africa’s Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, issued the call after meeting on the sidelines of the African Union Executive Council in Accra.

A statement released on Saturday by Alkasim Abdulkadir, Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Ambassador Tuggar, highlighted the ministers’ concerns over the loss of innocent civilian lives, the humanitarian crisis, and the displacement of millions due to the conflict.

The ministers also exchanged views on regional and continental issues, including peace and security in Africa. They committed to finalizing preparations for the upcoming session of the Bi-National Commission, scheduled to take place in South Africa.

The brutal civil war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, pits the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group. The power struggle between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo for control of Sudan has led to a dire humanitarian situation marked by widespread hunger and a collapsing healthcare system.
