Nigeria and Cameroon have inked an agreement focusing on Transboundary Ecosystem Conservation and Sustainable Management of Forestry and Wildlife Resources.
During the formal signing ceremony held in Abuja, Alhaji Balarabe Lawal, Nigeria’s Minister of Environment, emphasized the agreement’s pivotal role in curbing the exploitation and illegal trade of non-timber forest products and bush meats. He underscored the importance of ensuring that activities within border areas adhere to legal frameworks, thereby fostering environmental sustainability.
Highlighting the broader implications of the agreement, Alhaji Lawal emphasized its potential to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations. He noted that the accord aligns with the renewed focus on sustainable environmental development championed by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Terming environmental crimes as grave offenses, he stressed the need for robust cooperation in tackling these challenges.
Alhaji Lawal also highlighted the longstanding history of cooperation between Nigeria and Cameroon, dating back to 1963. He expressed optimism that the agreement would further solidify this relationship, serving as a cornerstone for establishing a joint cross-border management framework to enhance the sustainable utilization of forest resources.
According to Mr. Jules Doret Dongo, Cameroon’s Minister of Forestry and Wildlife Resources, the agreement sets forth several objectives, including the harmonization of protocols, joint border program implementation, institutional capacity enhancement, and mobilization of funds for cross-border initiatives. He urged all signatories to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the agreement’s implementation, affirming Cameroon’s readiness to take proactive measures in this regard.
Mr. Doret Ndongo emphasized the potential of enhanced bilateral agreements to drive socioeconomic development in both Cameroon and Nigeria. He called for further mutually beneficial engagements between the two nations, underlining the importance of collective efforts in realizing shared environmental conservation goals and fostering sustainable growth and development.
