Abuja, Nigeria — Nigeria has intensified efforts to address the persistent scarcity of aviation fuel and promote sustainable alternatives by hosting a high-level regional workshop focused on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production.
The two-day workshop, held under the Assistance, Capacity-building, and Training for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (ACT-SAF) Africa–India project, was organized by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) in partnership with the National Council on Climate Change Secretariat (NCCCS) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
According to NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu, the workshop convened stakeholders from 14 African countries. international financial institutions, and SAF developers to explore investment opportunities, mitigate risks, and enhance the bankability of SAF projects across the continent.
Coordinated by the NCAA’s Directorate of Air Transport Regulations, led by Mrs. Yinka Iriobe, the programme emphasized Nigeria’s domestic roadmap for sustainable fuel production and regional collaboration.
A key highlight of the event was the formal inauguration of six Technical Working Groups (TWGs) by NCAA Director-General Capt. Chris Najomo. These groups will focus on core areas including Policy and Regulation, Feedstock and Production, Funding and Investment, Technology and Innovation, Environmental and Social Impact, and Infrastructure and Logistics.
Capt. Najomo noted that the TWGs will play a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s SAF development strategy by aligning policy, infrastructure, finance, and innovation with environmental sustainability goals.
The workshop marks a strategic step in Nigeria’s commitment to energy transition and a more resilient aviation sector across Africa.
