Minna, Niger State — The Niger State Government has extended financial support of ₦174 million to victims of the recent dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area.
The announcement was made by Governor Mohammed Bago during his visit to the affected community last Sunday, where he assessed the extent of the damage.
The tragic blast claimed two lives, injured six people, and caused widespread destruction, including 17 completely destroyed houses, 35 partially damaged homes, and nine affected vehicles.
In addition to the state’s donation, former Governor Senator Abubakar Sani Bello contributed ₦50 million to assist the victims.
Governor Bago explained the allocation strategy for the state’s support: ₦5 million for families who lost their homes completely, ₦2 million for partially damaged homes, ₦1 million for each injured victim, and ₦2 million for the families of the deceased. Vehicle owners will also receive ₦1 million each for damages.
Addressing the community, the governor urged residents to adopt the state’s mining regulations and refrain from illegal dynamite storage to prevent further tragedies.
Minister of Information, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, described the incident as a man-made disaster, revealing that President Bola Tinubu had directed the National Orientation Agency to ramp up awareness campaigns against illegal mining.
Meanwhile, Mr. Umar Igade, Chairman of Mashegu Local Government, confirmed a temporary ban on artisanal mining in the area, citing the risks associated with dynamite stockpiling.
State and federal lawmakers emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulation of dynamite usage to ensure public safety.
