The Senate has called on President Bola Tinubu, as Chairman of ECOWAS, to further encourage other leaders of the regional grouping to strengthen political and diplomatic options in resolving the political impasse in Niger Republic.
The resolution followed the consideration of a letter by President Tinubu at plenary.
In the letter, the President informed the lawmakers of some resolutions reached at a meeting of ECOWAS leaders, which include, Closure and monitoring of all land borders with Niger Republic, reactivation of the Border Drill Exercise, and Cutting off Electricity supply to Niger Republic.
In the letter, the President told the Senate that Nigeria has the obligation to lead in the implementation of the directives outlined in the ECOWAS Communique.
After the letter was read out, the Senate went into an executive session, after which the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio mentioned the resolutions of the Senate.
The leadership of the Senate was thereby mandated to meet President Tinubu on how best to resolve the issue.
It also called on the ECOWAS parliament to condemn the coup and ensure that the political impasse is quickly resolved.
