NGO Promotes Cultural Reorientation to End GBV

The Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), a non-governmental organization, has called on all levels of government to collaborate with civil society organizations in combating gender-based violence (GBV) through cultural reorientation.

Speaking at a debate competition for secondary school students in Abuja, the Head of Communication and Knowledge Management at PPDC, Munachi Okoro, underscored the need for a comprehensive approach to tackling GBV. The event was part of activities marking the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an annual global campaign observed from November 25 to December 10.

Okoro emphasized that harmful cultural practices, particularly in rural communities, are major contributors to the persistence of GBV. “There is an urgent need to eliminate harmful cultural practices that negatively affect women and girls, ensuring they can live free of violence at home or in public,” she stated.

The debate aimed to raise awareness among young people about the cultural underpinnings of GBV. Okoro explained, “This initiative equips students with the knowledge to understand gender-based violence and its cultural roots. We are advocating for government and institutional support in addressing culturally ingrained forms of GBV.”

Youth as Advocates for Change

Precious Adigwe, PPDC’s Programme Officer for Gender Mainstreaming and Inclusion, highlighted the importance of collective efforts in eradicating GBV. She described the debate as a platform for young voices to engage in meaningful dialogue.

“This is not just a competition; it’s a platform for ideas, passion, and determination to address gender-based violence. We need young people, especially boys, to become advocates for change,” Adigwe said. She also noted the widespread impact of GBV on individuals and communities.

Participants in the debate, which included students from Aquila British International School and Government Secondary School, Gosa, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. Akpomera Michelle from Unique Children Academy in Lugbe, FCT, thanked the organizers and pledged to use her newfound knowledge to create awareness in her community.

Global Campaign Against GBV

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign aimed at eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls. It begins annually on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and concludes on December 10, Human Rights Day.

PPDC’s efforts reflect the broader goal of the campaign: fostering education, advocacy, and action to challenge the cultural norms that perpetuate GBV and build a violence-free future for all.
