The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has been advised to preserve and promote the cultural, historical, and spiritual values of the Yoruba people. His coronation, formalized with the presentation of the staff of office by the Oyo State Governor, has positioned him as a custodian of the Yoruba legacy.
The revered scholar and cultural advocate, Professor Toyin Falola, highlighted the critical role of the Alaafin in sustaining Yoruba traditions and fostering unity among the Yoruba sub-nations. He emphasized the importance of adhering to historical rites and maintaining the sacred nature of the Alaafin’s throne.
Professor Falola urged the new monarch to learn and document Yoruba history extensively, just as his predecessor, Alaafin Lamidi Adeyemi III, did. He suggested creating intellectual committees and collaborating with scholars to ensure that the wealth of Yoruba heritage is preserved and promoted globally.
The monarch is also tasked with revitalizing Yoruba cultural diplomacy by engaging with Yoruba descendants across the diaspora, including countries like Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, and Trinidad and Tobago. This outreach aims to strengthen the global influence of Yoruba culture and foster unity among Yoruba communities worldwide.
In addition, Professor Falola encouraged the Alaafin to champion developmental projects, such as establishing a museum to preserve cultural artifacts and a microfinance bank to empower low-income individuals. These initiatives, he said, will solidify the relevance of the monarchy in contemporary times while ensuring socio-economic growth.
The new Alaafin has also been advised to lead by example, avoiding acts that could undermine the dignity of the throne. He is expected to maintain ethical leadership, promote peace, and work toward making Yorubaland a hub of cultural, intellectual, and economic prosperity.
