NEMA, Stakeholders Assess Flood Damage in Kogi Communities

Kogi, NigeriaThe National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has carried out a joint assessment of the damage caused by recent flooding in parts of Kogi State, particularly in Lokoja and Kabba local government areas.

Following initial reports of the flood disaster, NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, directed the agency’s Abuja Operations Office—responsible for covering Kogi State—to immediately deploy a team to the affected areas for rapid evaluation.

Led by Zakari Abubakar, Head of NEMA’s Abuja Operations Office, the response team began their visit with a pre-assessment meeting involving the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency (KOSEMA) and other key partners. The team also paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Elder Joel Salifu, before heading to impacted communities across the two local government areas for on-the-ground inspections.

During the assessment, it was observed that several farmlands had been submerged, resulting in the destruction of crops and the disruption of livelihoods across the affected zones.

The assessment delegation included personnel from NEMA, KOSEMA, the Kogi State Fire Service, local government officials, youth leaders, traditional rulers, and the Executive Chairman of Kabba LGA.

Speaking after the visit, NEMA’s Director General, Zubaida Umar, reaffirmed the agency’s readiness to collaborate with the Kogi State Government and other stakeholders to address the impact of the floods and ensure that relief efforts reach those in need swiftly and effectively.
