NELFUND unveils Deadline for 23/24 Student Loan Applications

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has set February 21, 2025, as the closing date for the 2023/2024 student loan application cycle.

This announcement was made by Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, during a press conference in Abuja. He emphasized that the transition was essential for maintaining efficiency and aligning with the academic calendar.

“As part of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, the 2023/2024 student loan application portal will officially close on February 21, 2025,” Sawyerr stated. “The 2024/2025 application cycle will commence on February 22, 2025, to streamline our operations and enhance processing efficiency.”

He assured students who applied before the deadline that their applications would be processed accordingly. He also highlighted the success of recent sensitization campaigns, which led to a steady increase in student applications.

“The sensitization drive, including direct visits to institutions with low application rates, has significantly boosted engagement. Many students now recognize the program’s legitimacy, leading to an average of 1,000 applications daily,” Sawyerr added.

Looking ahead, NELFUND plans to expand awareness efforts nationwide and called on journalists to support the initiative by spreading accurate information.

Addressing concerns from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) regarding the absence of a student representative on the NELFUND Board, Mrs. Funmi Alagbada, Secretary of the Board, clarified that only President Bola Tinubu has the authority to make such appointments, as stipulated in the agency’s establishing Act.

The statement concluded with NELFUND reaffirming its commitment to providing accessible financial aid for Nigerian students.
