NDLEA recaptures drug convict after 7 year chase

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully apprehended Ibrahim Momoh in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after he eluded capture for seven years.

Femi Babafemi, the agency’s spokesperson, confirmed the rearrest in a statement on Sunday.

Initial arrest
Momoh, also known as Ibrahim Bendel, initially faced arrest on November 27, 2014, with 385.1 kg of cannabis sativa.

Subsequently convicted and sentenced to seven and a half years in prison on July 22, 2015, he escaped from Kuje prison on May 16, 2016, during his jail term.

Acting on credible intelligence, according to the statement, NDLEA operatives raided Momoh’s hideout at Filin Dabo, Dei-Dei area of the FCT, on November 20, 2022, seizing 1,278 kg of cannabis stored in 81 jumbo bags within his poultry farm.

“Although Momoh was absent, his warehouse manager, 55-year-old Richard Forson Gordon, was apprehended, prosecuted, and sentenced to two years in jail. This prompted the agency to declare Momoh a wanted fugitive.”

Present arrest
The pursuit culminated in Momoh’s arrest on November 5, 2023, during a raid at the same hideout, where he was found in possession of 56.9 kg of cannabis sativa and 42.7 grammes of diazepam, according to the NDLEA’s statement.

Furthermore, the NDLEA reported the arrest of five people, including another sought-after drug suspect named Christopher Onyebuchi, at New Bridge Compound, Idoani, Ondo State.

Operations conducted across several states—Edo, Ekiti, Ondo, Sokoto, Benue, Ogun, and Imo—resulted in the recovery of significant quantities of opioid pills, cannabis, codeine syrup, and molly, the statement further said.
