The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has seized a significant amount of cannabis sativa weighing 4,752kg that was concealed in the gas tank compartment of a truck along the Abuja-Abaji highway. The interception occurred during a stop-and-search operation on Wednesday, May 1, when NDLEA operatives discovered 511 jumbo sacks of the illicit substance in the truck with the registration number RBC 77XG. Four individuals were apprehended in connection with the seizure.

According to NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the illicit drug consignment was loaded in Ondo State and intended for further distribution in Abuja. Additionally, the agency successfully dismantled an international drug syndicate operating across Nigeria, South Africa, and Thailand. Five members of the cartel were arrested in Lagos, Abia, and Anambra states following the interception of their illegal drug shipments at the NAHCO import shed of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The unraveling of the drug cartel began with the arrival of four large suitcases containing Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, from Johannesburg on April 20. The first suspect, Umeh Chisom Peter, was apprehended on April 24 while attempting to collect two of the suitcases filled with the illicit substance. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of other members of the syndicate, including Mrs. Chinwendu Uche Ugbe, Onyejiakor Francis Chimezie, Nnaji Valentine Chukwukere, and Chinazo Osigwe in various locations across Nigeria.

Additionally, further operations in various states resulted in the arrest of individuals connected to the drug syndicate, including Aminu Umar, Anas Umar, and Bashir Umar, who were found in possession of cannabis sativa and codeine syrup. The NDLEA’s efforts have contributed to disrupting the activities of drug traffickers and enforcing the laws against drug trafficking in the country.
