NDDC Donates 100 Desks to Rivers School

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has provided 100 desks to Community Secondary School, Rumuekini, located in Obio/Akpor local government area, to address the severe shortage of furniture which has left over 70 percent of students sitting on the floor.

Chief Tony Okocha, the member representing Rivers State on the NDDC Board, announced the donation on Friday. He explained that the initiative was prompted by an impromptu visit to the school, where he witnessed the dire conditions firsthand.

“One morning, I visited this school without notifying the Principal or the CDC Chairman. Upon arrival, I saw the dilapidated state of the building, which poses a serious safety risk. I was particularly moved by the sight of students sitting on the bare floor in an uncomfortable learning environment,” Okocha stated. “This situation brought me to tears. Additionally, the lack of windows and doors means students face significant challenges, especially during rain.”

In his address, Gentle Akani, Chairman of the Rumuekini Community Development Committee, urged the NDDC to assist with further infrastructure rehabilitation at the school.

“We sincerely appreciate your visit. It has been a long time since government officials considered Rumuekini. Our school buildings are in disrepair, and the school is a community effort. We need the NDDC’s assistance with road access, solar-powered lighting, and reconstruction of the school laboratory,” Akani said.
