In a decisive operation, the Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operation Base in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom, apprehended two individuals and confiscated a wooden vessel laden with 5,100 litres of petrol. Navy Capt. Uche Aneke, Commanding Officer of the base, formally handed over the suspects, the vessel, and the illicit cargo to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Ibaka on Sunday.
The arrest unfolded on February 22 when a Navy patrol team acted upon actionable intelligence hinting at smuggling activities in the vicinity. Deploying naval gunboats, the team intercepted the wooden boat, revealing the two suspected smugglers and the concealed 5,100 litres of petrol cleverly stashed beneath bags of yams, cartons of beverages, and numerous floor tiles—all meticulously covered with tarpaulin.
Captain Aneke issued a stern caution to those engaged in unlawful enterprises, urging them to desist or face legal consequences. He emphasized that criminal elements should avoid Nigeria’s territorial waters, emphasizing the unwavering commitment of security agencies to combat illegal activities along the country’s coastal regions.
The suspects and seized items were handed over to Mr. Micheal Asibor, head of NSCDC’s anti-vandalism unit in Akwa Ibom, who assured a thorough prosecution of the incident, underscoring the dedication to upholding the rule of law in combating such illicit activities.
