National Council on Climate Change Welcomes New Interim CEO

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

Dr. Maduekwe, 39, holds a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Hull (UK). She will also serve as the Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

The announcement, made by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, highlighted Dr. Maduekwe’s extensive experience of over 15 years in climate policy development and project implementation. Previously, she was Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament and the legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.

Additionally, President Tinubu appointed Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement. Mr. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will manage climate finance and stakeholder relations at the NCCC Secretariat. He will also serve as Secretary of the NCMAP Intergovernmental Committee and as a member of the Presidential Committees on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions and Project Evergreen.

Furthermore, Mr. Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been named the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Technology and Operations. He will oversee digitalization initiatives and procedural optimizations at the NCCC Secretariat. Mr. Fagbuji previously served as Special Assistant to the President on Economic Matters and as Technical Adviser to the NCCC Director-General on Policy Research and Strategy. He is recognized for his expertise as a policy analyst and computer scientist.

These appointments are effective immediately, with President Tinubu expecting the appointees to leverage their expertise to advance Nigeria’s green industrial development and climate action goals for sustainable growth and national prosperity.
