NASS: Tinubu advocates for more moderation in the exercise of oversight functions

Edited by Afolabi Hannah

President Bola Tinubu has called for greater moderation in the way the legislature oversees the executive branch of government. Tinubu believes that exercising oversight functions with restraint will lead to increased efficiency, effective service delivery, and the promotion of good governance and accountability.

Tinubu made these remarks during a Ramadan fast-breaking event with Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and the House of Representatives leadership in Abuja on Wednesday. He expressed concerns about various committees summoning ministers and agency heads excessively, urging them to focus on their primary duties and responsibilities to ensure smooth operations.

Acknowledging the importance of a harmonious relationship between the executive and legislative branches, Tinubu commended the National Assembly for passing several bills aimed at improving the welfare of Nigerians. He also encouraged legislators to prioritize their constituencies and show compassion towards the less privileged during the holy month of Ramadan.

Addressing the recent tragic killing of soldiers in Delta State, Tinubu extended his condolences to the families of the fallen heroes and pledged to ensure they receive a dignified burial and national honors. Speaker Abbas emphasized the significance of forgiveness, generosity, and prayers during Ramadan, calling for unity in the nation and continued support for Tinubu.

Reflecting on the 10 months of the current administration, Speaker Abbas highlighted the collaborative efforts between the executive and legislative branches in advancing the country’s progress. He affirmed the House’s support for the President’s policies and commitment to working together for the nation’s development.
