The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced that it will not participate in the planned nationwide protest on August 1, despite widespread hardship in the country.
NANS National President, Lucky Emonefe, made this declaration during a meeting with the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, in Abuja on Friday. The meeting was organized by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Engagement, Comrade Sunday Asefon.
Emonefe acknowledged the severe hardship facing citizens due to recent government reforms and policies. He noted that while these measures aim to drive sustainable development, they have resulted in economic challenges impacting every Nigerian household.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to implement mechanisms to alleviate the hunger caused by the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023. “We want to say that there is hunger in the land and Nigerian students are most affected. We are aware that palliatives were given to governors. We are saying that as the government is distributing palliatives, they should remember the student constituencies,” Emonefe stated. Despite the challenges, NANS has resolved to remain law-abiding and not join any societal chaos.
Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, acknowledged the rising cost of living and outlined government efforts to mitigate the impact. He highlighted the launch of an expanded transformative scholarship programme supporting the education of 45,000 students nationwide, demonstrating the government’s commitment to broadening educational access and advancing the academic and professional growth of Nigerian youth.
Professor Mamman also detailed key initiatives of President Tinubu’s administration, including campus infrastructure improvements, welfare packages for unemployed graduates, and considerations for discounted electricity bills for universities. Additionally, curriculum updates under the DOTS Project aim to enhance educational data management, support teacher development, and integrate skills training from primary through tertiary education.
The government is also focusing on reintegrating out-of-school children into the education system and supporting job-seeking graduates. Moreover, Safe School Centres have been established to ensure student safety.
