The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has disassociated itself from a widely circulated notice claiming that the student body is organizing nationwide protests on September 15, 2024, in response to the recent fuel price hike.
Speaking to Newsmen, NANS national president, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, clarified that no such protest has been planned, labeling the circulating notification as “fake” and stating that it did not originate from his office.
Comrade Gundu Mimidoo Joy, the Public Relations Officer of NANS, also confirmed that the protest notice did not come from the student body. She attributed the misinformation to individuals with personal agendas rather than NANS itself.
Earlier reports had surfaced of a notification allegedly signed by Okunomo Henry Adewumi, claiming to be the Senate president of NANS, which suggested that the student group was preparing to shut down major cities across the country in protest. The alleged protest was said to be in reaction to the recent rise in fuel prices and perceived incompetence of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari.
However, NANS leadership has firmly distanced itself from the purported plan, urging the public to disregard the fake notification.
