NANS Condemns Assault on Corps Member in Anambra, Demands Swift Justice

Anambra state, NigeriaThe National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly condemned the alleged assault of a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Edema Elohor Jennifer (AN/24C/0626), by operatives of the Anambra State Vigilante Group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the association’s National Public Relations Officer, Adeyemi Samson, NANS described the incident as a serious violation of the victim’s dignity, safety, and fundamental rights.

According to details provided by the NYSC, the vigilante operatives reportedly invaded a Corps members’ lodge under the guise of investigating alleged unlawful activity — a claim the scheme has yet to verify. During the raid, Jennifer, who was visiting the premises, was allegedly subjected to physical assault by the officers.

“This action is not only unjustified but deeply disturbing,” the NANS statement read. “It represents a dangerous affront to the ideals of national service, the rule of law, and the basic principles of human rights.”

The association expressed growing concern over what it described as the “increasing tendency of unregulated security outfits to operate outside the bounds of legality and accountability,” warning that such actions pose a broader threat to Nigerian youths.

NANS called on the Anambra State Government and relevant security agencies to launch an immediate investigation, prosecute those found culpable, and take preventive steps to avoid similar incidents in the future.

“It is imperative that Corps members feel safe and protected in their places of primary assignment and residence,” the association added.

Declaring its solidarity with the assaulted Corps member, NANS reiterated its commitment to defending the rights and welfare of Nigerian students and youths.

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the statement concluded
