NAHCON: Over 2,700 Pilgrims Affected by Portal Closure

Abuja, NigeriaThe National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has confirmed that 2,717 Nigerian intending pilgrims have been unable to obtain visas for the 2025 Hajj due to the closure of the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s visa portal, despite repeated diplomatic interventions.

In a statement issued by Fatima Usara, Assistant Director of Information and Publication at NAHCON, the Commission expressed deep regret over the situation, which it said followed four separate deadline extensions aimed at accommodating late registrants. The Saudi visa portal officially closed on May 19, 2025, leaving thousands disappointed, including those who delayed critical payments and logistics processes.

NAHCON emphasized that it had gone to great lengths to prevent such outcomes. These efforts included securing Masha’ir slots for Nigerian Hajj coordinators and negotiating a one-month extension beyond the initial April 19 visa deadline. These measures were implemented to give state pilgrims boards and private tour operators more time to complete necessary arrangements.

However, NAHCON also raised concerns about the activities of some tour operators who have reportedly engaged unauthorized third-party vendors for Tent A+ premium accommodation services, which fall outside the Commission’s officially recognized provider, Rawaf Mina Company.

“All arrangements outside this official provider are considered invalid, and the Commission cannot be held liable for their consequences,” Usara stated, warning that such actions could violate Saudi Arabia’s Hajj regulations and compromise pilgrims’ welfare.

Tour operators have been firmly reminded to operate strictly within NAHCON’s guidelines, especially as the Commission continues its collaboration with Saudi authorities to safeguard the interests of all Nigerian pilgrims.

While sympathizing with those unable to participate this year, NAHCON urged prospective pilgrims to begin preparations early and adhere to official timelines, underscoring that Hajj is a divine calling that requires timely and spiritual readiness.
