The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration Control (NAFDAC) has raised concerns about counterfeit units of the cancer medication Perjeta circulating in Nigeria. According to a statement on its official website, Roche, the marketing authorization holder, was alerted by a pharmacist about suspected fake Perjeta (420 mg/14 mL).
The batch number of the reported products did not match any authentic Roche batch numbers, making it impossible to trace. Further analysis revealed significant differences in the packaging materials compared to genuine Roche products, confirming the counterfeiting.
NAFDAC highlighted that Perjeta 420 mg is a crucial drug used in treating breast cancer when other treatments are ineffective. It helps inhibit cancer growth and manage symptoms like breast lumps or nipple discharge.
Healthcare professionals and the public have been urged to report any suspicions of counterfeit or substandard medical products to the nearest NAFDAC office or through their helplines and email.
