Nigeria __ The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken drastic measures to curb the sale of substandard and adulterated medicines by shutting down the popular Onitsha Drug Market in Anambra State.
A combined enforcement team, comprising the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS), and NAFDAC officials, raided the market, confiscating unregistered and falsified drugs worth millions of naira.
According to Dr. Martins Iluyomade, NAFDAC Southeast Zonal Director, the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to eliminate counterfeit medicines and protect public health. The agency has made alarming discoveries, including traders packaging harmful substances for human consumption and repackaging empty containers of manufactured drugs with counterfeit seals and expiry dates. NAFDAC has assured that those responsible for adulterating medicines will be identified and prosecuted. The agency has also advised Nigerians to remain vigilant about the medicines they consume, urging them to purchase drugs only from accredited sources.
