The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit, expired, unregistered, and smuggled products worth ₦10,991,458,374.60 in a recent exercise held in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
The destroyed goods were collected from five South-Western states, excluding Lagos, and Kwara State in the North-Central region.
Representing NAFDAC’s Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, South-West Zonal Director Mrs. Roseline Ajayi emphasized that the exercise was part of ongoing efforts to reassure the public that confiscated products were not diverted but instead properly destroyed under stringent supervision.
“The disposal process was carried out at a designated dumpsite approved by the Oyo State Government, in order to minimize environmental harm,” Ajayi noted.
The destruction event was attended by several key stakeholders, including Dr. Akin Fagbemi, Chairman of the Oyo State Hospital Management Board, as well as officials from the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Police (NP), and the Department of State Services (DSS).
Ajayi explained that the products destroyed consisted of expired goods voluntarily surrendered by distributors, unregistered and unsafe items seized from various outlets and warehouses, as well as smuggled counterfeit imports.
She stated that the total value of the destroyed items was estimated at ₦10.9 billion.
In her remarks, Adeyeye urged Nigerians to support efforts in eliminating counterfeit, substandard, and unapproved products from circulation. “Every Nigerian should be an ambassador for NAFDAC, helping to ensure the safety of the food and drug sectors in Nigeria,” she added.
