The Plateau State government has announced a three-day mourning period for the victims of the Saint Academy School building collapse that occurred on Friday.
From July 13 to July 15, all flags within the state will be flown at half-mast in honor of the victims, according to a statement released by Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms, on Saturday.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who visited the site of the collapse, expressed his heartfelt condolences to the affected families and urged adherence to building codes and ethics to prevent future tragedies.
“We offer our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to those affected during this incredibly difficult time. We are committed to providing the best possible medical care for the injured and will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse,” Mutfwang stated.
He emphasized the importance of citizen safety, particularly for children, and called on all schools to comply with safety regulations and secure necessary approvals from the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) before beginning any construction projects.
The governor also instructed developers and property owners to submit their building plans to the JMDB for verification and revalidation as part of enforcing Executive Order 003.
