Karolina Muchova delivered a stunning upset in the China Open quarterfinals, defeating world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4, ending Sabalenka’s 15-match winning streak.
Ranked 49th, Muchova triumphed after a grueling 2-hour and 46-minute contest, saving set points in the opening set and coming back from a 4-2 deficit in the decisive third set. This victory marks Muchova’s third consecutive win against Sabalenka, extending her lead in their head-to-head series to 3-1.
Sabalenka’s impressive streak began with her title win in Cincinnati in August, followed by a runner-up finish at the U.S. Open last month. She also captured the Australian Open title earlier this year. The 15-match streak tied her previous career-best from the 2020-2021 season.
Muchova, who reached the U.S. Open semifinals last month, will now face China’s Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals. Zheng, seeded fifth, rallied to defeat Russia’s Mirra Andreeva 5-7, 6-0, 6-4, becoming the first Chinese player to reach the Beijing semifinals since Wang Qiang in 2018.
