MTN Nigeria Communications Limited unveiled its collaboration with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) to distribute vital weather and climate data to farmers across Nigeria. This strategic partnership, announced by NiMet, follows the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding in February 2024 between NiMet and Tomorrow.io, a prominent weather intelligence firm headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, with a strong presence in Africa and the Middle East.
The collaboration between these two entities encompasses various endeavors, including the commercialization of weather data, enhancement of forecast accuracy, and integration of artificial intelligence in weather and climate analytics.
Tobechukwu Okigbo, MTN’s Chief Corporate Services & Sustainability Officer, emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting national initiatives aimed at improving the livelihoods of Nigerians. He expressed MTN’s readiness to facilitate NiMet’s collaboration with Tomorrow.io to extend weather services to farmers nationwide, underscoring the company’s commitment to bolstering the nation’s food security efforts.
In response, Professor Charles Anosike, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the agency’s pivotal role in collecting, processing, and disseminating meteorological data essential for informed decision-making across various sectors. He underscored the significance of weather and climate information for sectors such as aviation, marine, oil and gas, construction, and academia. Professor Anosike expressed NiMet’s enthusiasm for partnering with MTN Nigeria to empower farmers with crucial weather insights, aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda’s focus on enhancing food security.
