The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported eight new cases of Mpox, raising the total number of confirmed infections to 48 out of 868 suspected cases across 35 local government areas in 20 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the Mpox situation report for week 34 (August 25), shared on the NCDC’s official X handle, the newly confirmed cases were recorded in Enugu (4), Bayelsa (1), Cross River (1), Edo (1), and Osun (1). The report also indicated a rise in suspected cases, with 57 new reports in week 34 compared to 25 in the previous week.
Despite the increase in cases, the NCDC noted that there have been no deaths from Mpox in 2024. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to coordinating the national response through the Mpox multi-sectoral and multi-partner Emergency Operation Center (EOC).
Mpox, a viral disease caused by the monkeypox virus, presents symptoms such as skin rashes or sores, fever, headache, muscle pain, back pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes. The virus is transmitted through contact with infected individuals, contaminated materials, or animals.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) have both declared Mpox a public health emergency due to the increasing number of infections worldwide.
