Mother is seeking justice for her daughter who was allegedly sexually assaulted. A mother named Rita Ebirim is seeking justice after her five-year-old daughter was allegedly defiled by her brother-in-law in Lagos. The concerned mother, who spoke with a journalist on Friday, shared that her estranged husband had initiated divorce proceedings on August 2, 2022. While waiting for the trial, the court instructed her to allow the father to have visitation with their daughter.

Ebirim revealed that her daughter was assaulted during her second visit to her father by his sibling. She recounted, “One morning in February last year, he came to pick her up for the first time and brought her back in the evening. On that day, I sensed that something wasn’t right with my daughter and shared my concerns with my lawyer, but he dismissed them. The following visit, she returned to me late at night. When I tried to bathe her, she started crying and refused my touch to ‘that’ area.” “When I asked her who had touched her there, she disclosed that her uncle was the one,” Ebirim stated. When she informed her daughter’s father, he denied any wrongdoing and advised her to take the child to the hospital, despite the late hour. “I took her to two medical facilities, and upon examination, doctors confirmed she had injuries on her private parts, indicating she had been sexually abused,” she added. Reports indicate that the incident was reported to the Ketu police station and the Lagos State Sexual and Domestic Violence Agency.

Although the accused was initially detained, he was later granted bail, leading to a prolonged delay in seeking justice. An update on the case was provided by the Executive Secretary of the DSVA, Titilola Vivour-Adeniyi, who shared that a forensic interview was conducted for the child, and the case was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for further legal proceedings. Vivour-Adeniyi revealed, “The agency received a report on February 20, 2023, regarding an alleged defilement case involving individual X. It was reported that Mr. O had allegedly sexually abused her during a visit.

The agency promptly referred the case to the Ketu divisional police station and then to State CID, Panti, for investigations. Two agency officers were assigned to support the mother at the police station. Subsequently, the case was sent to Cece Yara Child Advocacy Centre for a successful forensic interview in April 2023. The case file is now with the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal guidance.”
