More than 971 Nigerians were kidnapped in October 2024-Report

In October 2024, a total of 971 Nigerians  were abducted across the country, according to the ‘October 2024 Nigeria Security Report’ by Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited (BSIL).

This disturbing revelation comes at a time when a new terror group called ‘Lakurawa’ has emerged in the northwestern part of the country. The report indicates a significant deterioration in security metrics, with a rise in incidents, abductions, and fatalities, suggesting that 2024 could be one of the worst years in terms of security performance in about a decade.

The report highlights that violent activities, including killings and kidnappings for ransom by non-state armed groups (NSAGs), criminal gangs, cult groups, armed ethnic militias, and social unrest triggered by socio-economic challenges and political activities, were prevalent during the month. The data revealed a 51% increase in fatalities and a 24.42% rise in abductions compared to the previous month.

The breakdown of the report shows that the North East and North West regions were the most affected by security incidents, with the North West recording the highest rate of abductions. The report also indicates a significant increase in fatalities, with the North West and North Central regions reporting the highest numbers.

In an interview, the CEO of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, Dr. Kabir Adamu, raised concerns over the weak and ineffective security management system in the country. He pointed out that the country has not been able to address the root causes and manifestations of insecurity, leading to a worsening security situation.

Dr. Adamu emphasized the need to address socio-economic, political, and environmental factors driving insecurity, along with implementing existing counter-terrorism strategies effectively.
