Nigeria – Dele Momodu, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it undemocratic. The move, which involves suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and the Rivers State House of Assembly for six months, has sparked widespread opposition.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Monday, Momodu expressed disappointment, stating that Tinubu, once a pro-democracy advocate, was now making decisions that contradicted the principles he once defended.
“I find this situation very unfortunate. I know President Tinubu very well, even though we have never been in the same political party. We were together in exile, and he fought bravely for democracy. Many of us who stood by him during that time are now embarrassed by his actions, which seem worse than dictatorship,” Momodu remarked.
He further argued that while failures in economic policies might be forgivable, undermining democracy would not be tolerated. “You can struggle with the economy, and people will understand. But democracy must be strengthened, just as Presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Olusegun Obasanjo did, despite controversies surrounding them.”
Momodu urged Tinubu to reconsider his approach, cautioning that those advising him might be misleading him. “I am pleading with President Tinubu—please do not destroy democracy in Nigeria. Those who care about him should tell him the truth. I have no personal demands, but I respect his past contributions, and it pains me to see them being undone,” he added.
He also accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of intimidating the opposition and emphasized that good governance—not oppression—was the key to securing a second term.
“The only way to ensure reelection is by doing the job well. There is no need for intimidation,” Momodu concluded.
