The Ministry of Women Affairs has announced its partnership with the Niger State House of Assembly to empower 100 orphan girls through various welfare initiatives.
Minister Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye made this commitment during a briefing in Abuja, where she clarified the Ministry’s stance on the issue of mass weddings.
Kennedy-Ohanenye emphasized the Ministry’s dedication to its mandate of protecting the rights of women, children, and vulnerable groups, in line with the current administration’s policy objectives.
The Minister revealed that this intervention addresses a previous court injunction that halted marriage proceedings, pending thorough investigations into the welfare and readiness of the children, particularly concerning their ages and preparedness for marriage.
Kennedy-Ohanenye highlighted the agreement between the Ministry and the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly to jointly implement initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the orphans. These initiatives include formal education, skills acquisition programs, and the provision of tools tailored to the girls’ individual interests and needs.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the support received from notable figures, including the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Emir of Kotangora, Alhaji Mohammed Barau Muazu, and various religious institutions, for their contributions toward resolving the mass wedding issue.
