Minister Sues House of Rep Member and Arise TV for Defamation

The Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has filed a defamation lawsuit against House of Representatives member Kafilat Ogbara and Arise Television.

Speaking to the media in Abuja, the minister stated that the writ of summons was issued in response to false allegations made by Kafilat Ogbara, Chairperson of the House Committee on Women Affairs, during an interview on Arise Television on June 5, 2024.

During the interview, Ogbara claimed that Kennedy-Ohanenye was under investigation by the Committee on Public Procurement and was being summoned to appear before the House Committee on Women Affairs over various offenses.

Kennedy-Ohanenye clarified that these accusations pertain to transactions that occurred before she assumed her role as Minister of Women Affairs. She stated that the false allegations have subjected her to significant hostility and ridicule, impacting her reputation among friends, associates, lawyers, and relatives.

The minister further explained that she had expressed her disapproval of the false allegations and, to date, no effort had been made by the defendants to retract the statements.

“I have reached out to the defendants and conveyed how offensive the publication was, especially since it is not true. However, they have neither apologized nor retracted the defamatory publication,” she said.

Kennedy-Ohanenye added that she has filed claims against the defendants jointly and severally, seeking damages amounting to N1 billion for defamation of character.
