Minister Intervenes to Prevent Marriage of 100 Orphans in Niger State

Mrs. Uju Kennedy-Ohannaye, the Minister of Women Affairs, has intervened legally to halt the proposed marriage of 100 orphans in Niger State.

The decision comes as a response to the plan put forth by the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, to marry young girls, citing concerns over the increasing number of orphans being married off to bandits.

Mrs. Kennedy-Ohannaye strongly condemned the proposed marriages, citing violations of the Child Rights Act and raising significant concerns about the ages and consent of the girls involved.

Highlighting the importance of safeguarding the future of these girls, she pledged to provide them with necessary support and empowerment opportunities to help them fulfill their potential.

Mrs. Kennedy-Ohannaye has notified the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, urging them to initiate an investigation into the matter.

In a separate development, Mrs. Kennedy-Ohannaye revealed plans to distribute Point of Sale (POS) machines, laptops, and farming tools to women across all thirty-six states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), as part of the Ministry’s sustainable empowerment initiatives.
