Minister Engages Dangote, NMDPRA, Others Over Refinery Dispute

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, has convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders in the oil and gas sector to address and resolve the ongoing issues surrounding the Dangote Refinery.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, has faced challenges with the government over his Lagos refinery project. Dangote had proposed selling the refinery to the state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), citing obstruction from a cabal preventing crude imports and product acquisition, which has hindered operations.

The situation escalated when the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) announced that the government had yet to license the Dangote refinery to commence operations.

To address these issues, Senator Lokpobiri intervened by organizing a high-level stakeholder meeting.

A statement by the Minister’s Special Adviser on Media and Communication, Nneamaka Okafor, read: “The Minister of State Petroleum Resources [Oil], Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, yesterday convened a high-level meeting with key stakeholders to address and resolve the ongoing issues surrounding the Dangote Refinery.”

Attendees included Aliko Dangote, Chairman and CEO of Dangote Group; Farouk Ahmed of NMDPRA; Engr. Gbenga Komolafe of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC); and Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL.

The stakeholders expressed gratitude to the Minister for his leadership and timely intervention in facilitating this crucial dialogue. The meeting aimed to find a sustainable and lasting solution to the current impasse affecting the Dangote Refinery, with all parties committed to collaborative and proactive problem-solving.

Senator Lokpobiri emphasized the importance of cooperation and synergy among all stakeholders to ensure the success and optimal performance of the oil and gas sector, which is vital for Nigeria’s economic growth and energy security.
