The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has expressed sorrow over the recent stampedes in Maitama, Abuja, and Okija, Anambra State, during food distribution events aimed at providing relief during the festive season.
In a statement issued on Saturday by her media team, the minister described the tragic incidents as avoidable, noting that while the intentions of the donors were commendable, poor crowd management led to unnecessary loss of lives and injuries.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim offered her condolences to the families of the victims, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Soludo. She also prayed for the repose of the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.
Calling for thorough investigations into the tragedies, the minister emphasized the importance of pre-event crowd assessments, including estimating the number of recipients and ensuring proper planning.
She advised organizers of similar events to use spacious, open venues with minimal obstacles and to schedule distributions during periods of lower crowd density to reduce risks.
Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has canceled all official engagements in Lagos, including his attendance at the 2024 Lagos Boat Regatta, in response to the incidents.
