Brussels, Belgium — In a proactive response to escalating cyber threats across Europe, Microsoft has unveiled a no-cost cybersecurity program aimed at equipping European governments with stronger tools to combat digitally driven attacks, particularly those enhanced by artificial intelligence (AI).
Announced on Wednesday, the initiative seeks to bolster cooperation in the detection and disruption of malicious cyber activities, many of which have been linked to state-backed actors from China, Iran, North Korea, and Russia.
The program focuses on enhanced intelligence sharing, specifically addressing the evolving landscape of AI-powered threats. Microsoft warns that adversaries are increasingly leveraging generative AI technologies to amplify the reach and complexity of their operations—ranging from attacks on critical infrastructure to widespread disinformation campaigns.
Speaking on the initiative, Microsoft President Brad Smith acknowledged the dual nature of AI in today’s cybersecurity environment.
“AI can be a powerful shield if used wisely,” he said. “Our priority must be to ensure that defensive use of AI progresses faster than its exploitation by malicious actors.”
Microsoft further affirmed that it maintains strict monitoring of its AI tools to detect and prevent misuse. Known cybercriminals are routinely blocked from accessing the company’s AI platforms, as part of broader efforts to maintain digital integrity and user trust.
As cyber threats continue to evolve at a rapid pace, the tech giant’s new initiative is seen as a strategic effort to reinforce digital resilience across Europe’s public sector.
