Inter Miami suffered their first defeat in the Major League Soccer season as they were beaten 3-2 by Montreal in a home fixture that saw Argentine star Lionel Messi rested. Montreal’s Fernando Alvarez, Matias Coccaro, and Sunusi Ibrahim scored the goals that clinched the victory, propelling Montreal to second place in the Eastern Conference standings, trailing only on goal difference behind Miami.
Miami’s coach, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, made the decision to rest key players such as Messi, Luis Suarez, and Sergio Busquets, a move that was soon questioned as Montreal took the lead early on through Alvarez’s header. Miami had moments of promise, with Jordi Alba having a goal disallowed for offside and Robert Taylor hitting the crossbar before halftime.
Miami managed to equalize in the second half through Leonardo Campana’s header, but Montreal struck back with two quick goals from Coccaro and Ibrahim, putting the game out of reach for Miami. Alba’s late stunning goal provided a glimmer of hope, but Montreal held on for the win.
In other MLS matches on the same day, Cincinnati played a goalless draw against D.C. United, while Los Angeles Galaxy staged a comeback to secure a 2-2 draw against Nashville after trailing 2-0, with goals from Riqui Puig and Dejan Joveljic.
