Meta has taken down 63,000 Facebook accounts associated with Nigerians allegedly involved in financial sextortion schemes.
The U.S.-based company announced this action in a statement on Wednesday titled, “Combating Financial Sextortion Scams From Nigeria.”
This development comes shortly after the Nigerian Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) fined Meta and its messaging platform, WhatsApp, $220 million for data privacy breaches and discriminatory practices against Nigerians.
Meta, which plans to appeal the fine, clarified that the removal of the 63,000 accounts is part of its efforts to combat criminal activities.
“We’ve banned Yahoo Boys under Meta’s Dangerous Organizations and Individuals Policy — one of our strictest policies — which means we remove accounts of Yahoo Boys’ who engage in this criminal activity whenever we become aware of them,” Meta stated.
“First, we removed around 63,000 accounts in Nigeria that attempted to directly engage in financial sextortion scams.”
In Nigeria, ‘Yahoo Boys’ is a colloquial term used to describe individuals involved in internet scams.
