Spain– A devastating car accident in northwestern Spain has claimed the lives of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, André Filipe Teixeira da Silva, a professional footballer for Penafiel in Portugal’s second division.
According to AFP, Spanish police confirmed that the incident occurred on Thursday, July 3, 2025, when the vehicle carrying the brothers veered off the motorway in the municipality of Cernadilla, located in the province of Zamora. The crash took place just weeks after Jota celebrated his wedding.
André Silva, 25, was born on April 28, 2000, in Gondomar, Portugal. Like his brother, he pursued a career in football, most recently representing FC Penafiel as an attacking midfielder. Standing at 1.68 metres and known for his versatility on the pitch, Silva could also play on the left wing or as a centre-forward.
At the time of his death, Silva’s market value was €450,000—the highest of his professional career, reflecting a steady climb through Portugal’s domestic football ranks. He began his journey with Gondomar SC in 2008 before joining FC Porto’s youth academy. Over the years, he also featured for clubs such as Famalicão U23, Boavista U23, and Gondomar, moving primarily on free transfers.
Despite never commanding major headlines, Silva earned a reputation for his dedication and progression across various youth and senior teams. He joined Penafiel in 2023, where he continued to demonstrate promise on the field.
The football community in Portugal and abroad has been deeply shaken by the loss of the two brothers, united not only by blood but also by a profound commitment to the sport. Tributes continue to pour in as fans, teammates, and clubs mourn a shared tragedy that has cast a pall over the world of football.
