Madrid, Spain — Kylian Mbappé delivered a sensational hat-trick as Real Madrid secured a 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League second-leg play-off, sealing a 6-3 aggregate win to advance to the next round.
The French superstar made history, becoming the first player to score a Champions League knockout stage hat-trick against a Pep Guardiola-managed side.
Mbappé’s Masterclass Sinks City
Real Madrid wasted no time asserting dominance, with Mbappé opening the scoring just four minutes in. Latching onto a precise long ball from Raul Asensio, the forward coolly lifted the ball over Ederson, setting the tone for the night.
The second goal came in the 33rd minute when Rodrygo played him through. Mbappé dribbled past Josko Gvardiol inside the box before clinically slotting into the net.
His hat-trick was sealed in the 61st minute after Federico Valverde provided the assist. With a deft step-over to outfox his marker, Mbappé curled a left-footed shot into the far corner, leaving the Etihad stunned.
Despite the dominant display, Nico González pulled one back for City in stoppage time (92’), but it was nothing more than a consolation.
Elsewhere in the Champions League
In France, Paris Saint-Germain produced a statement performance, thrashing Ligue 1 rivals Brest 7-0, completing an emphatic 10-0 aggregate victory to storm into the Round of 16.
Meanwhile, in Germany, Borussia Dortmund advanced after a goalless draw with Sporting Lisbon. Having secured a 3-0 first-leg win, the Bundesliga side progressed comfortably.
With Mbappé in scintillating form, Real Madrid now turn their focus to the quarter-finals, as they continue their quest for yet another European crown.
