Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Government has vowed to investigate the Canadian Embassy’s refusal to grant visas to Nigeria’s top military officers.
The call was made by Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, in a statement issued today by Iyogun Sunday, Director of Information and Public Relations at the ministry.
Expressing deep disappointment, Matawalle described the visa denials, affecting Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa and other senior officials, as a serious diplomatic slight that could strain Nigeria-Canada relations.
“This is not just a bureaucratic error; it is an affront to our national dignity,” he said. “Nigeria must respond decisively to protect its integrity on the global stage.”
The minister called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, stressing that if no satisfactory explanation is provided, Nigeria must take firm diplomatic action.
While the specific reasons for the denials remain unclear, Matawalle raised concerns over Canada’s treatment of Nigerian military officials, emphasizing the need to safeguard the country’s international reputation.
The affected delegation was set to attend a ceremony honoring Nigerian veterans in Canada. Matawalle condemned the visa refusal as a major act of disrespect.
The issue has drawn sharp criticism, with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu also expressing displeasure over the treatment of Nigeria’s top military personnel.
Despite widespread condemnation, the Canadian government has yet to offer any official response.
