In a landmark move, the Borno State government has greenlit a groundbreaking scholarship program worth 1.3 billion naira, benefiting a cohort of 997 homegrown individuals embarking on nursing and midwifery studies.
Governor Babagana Zulum, while inaugurating the scholarship drive at the College of Nursing and Midwifery in Maiduguri, underscored its pivotal role in addressing the acute shortage of frontline healthcare professionals in the state.
Out of the allocated sum, 124 million naira has been designated for covering tuition fees, while a staggering 1.1 billion naira will be disbursed as a monthly stipend of 30,000 naira per beneficiary for the duration of their academic pursuit.
Furthermore, Governor Zulum has earmarked 201 million naira as a bursary allowance for an additional 2,010 students enrolled in the College of Nursing, extending financial support beyond the scholarship recipients.
Expounding on his administration’s commitment to bolstering healthcare education, Governor Zulum announced plans for the establishment of two new colleges of nursing, strategically located in both the northern and southern regions of the state.
Dr. Farouk Abubakar, the Registrar of the Nursing Council of Nigeria, hailed this initiative as unprecedented, lauding Borno’s dedication to nurturing the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Echoing this sentiment, Commissioner for Education, Alhaji Lawan Wakilbe, revealed a substantial investment of over six billion naira in scholarships since May 29, 2019, with a substantial portion allocated from May 29, 2023, onwards, underscoring the government’s steadfast commitment to educational advancement.
