Miami, USA — Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano has acknowledged the quality of opposition his team faced in Al Ahly, following their tense goalless draw in the opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup at the Hard Rock Stadium.
In what was a closely contested fixture, the Egyptian champions controlled the tempo in the first half, while the hosts showed renewed confidence and initiative in the second. One of the pivotal moments of the game came just before halftime when Mahmoud Trezeguet’s penalty was expertly saved by Inter Miami’s goalkeeper, preserving the deadlock.
Speaking in his post-match remarks, Mascherano admitted that his players struggled with nerves early on but showed resilience and tactical improvement after the break.
“I’m pleased with how we responded in the second half,” said the former Argentina midfielder. “In the first 45 minutes, we made too many unforced errors and gave Al Ahly too many openings. They’re a strong and experienced side, and we expected a tough contest.”
The tactician lauded his team’s response and fighting spirit, emphasizing that the second-half display showed the kind of potential the squad has moving forward in the competition.
“We regained control, created real chances, and could have won it. It’s part of football. The most important thing is how we reacted. The team showed great character,” Mascherano said.
Reflecting further, he admitted that the pressure of the tournament opener may have affected his players’ composure, but he remains optimistic.
“We were well aware of Al Ahly’s strength. The tension got to us initially, but overall, the team left a solid impression. Playing this way, I believe we have what it takes to go far,” he stated.
Mascherano also reserved special praise for Lionel Messi, who once again led the team with characteristic passion and intensity.
“It’s truly inspiring to see Messi still giving everything to the game. After all he’s accomplished, his hunger and commitment remain unmatched,” Mascherano remarked. “Naturally, we aimed for a win, but I’m proud of the way the team played today.”
Inter Miami will now turn their focus to their next fixture, aiming to build on this performance and push further into the tournament.
