Jimmy Buffett, widely known for his 1970s hit Margaritaville, has died at the age of 76.
Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1 surrounded by his family, friends, music according to a statement posted on his website.
“He lived his life like a song until his last breath and will be sorely missed by so many.” the statement says.
The cause of Buffett’s death was not disclosed, but he had recently been hospitalized.
Buffett was born in Mississippi but raised in neighboring Alabama before relocating to Nashville, Tennessee.
With the ambition of becoming a country singer, he worked for the music and entertainment magazine Billboard.
Buffett made his musical breakthrough with his 1977 album Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes, which included the song Margaritaville, which enjoyed 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Buffett was nominated for two Grammy awards and was a prolific artist – releasing more than 20 albums. Earlier this year he revealed that he had recorded a new work.
Escape to Margaritaville, a musical based on his songs, made its Broadway debut in 2018.
Some of his contemporaries have also paid tribute, including Elton John, who described Buffett as “a unique and treasured entertainer” who had “gone way too soon.”
Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys tweeted a photo of one of Buffett’s album covers with the caption “love and mercy, Jimmy Buffett.”
His net worth was estimated by Forbes to be $1bn (£794m), according to figures released this month.
Buffett is survived by his wife Jane and their three children.
