India, Nigeria:In a rare and remarkable survival, a man has been confirmed as the sole survivor of a catastrophic Air India crash that claimed the lives of at least 204 people, officials announced.
Ahmedabad Police Commissioner GS Malik revealed to the Indian news agency ANI that the survivor, seated in 11A on the ill-fated Boeing 787-8, was British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh. The flight was en route from India to London Gatwick Airport when it tragically crashed shortly after takeoff.
Ramesh’s cousin, Ajay Valgi from Leicester, told the BBC that he had received a call from Ramesh confirming he was safe. However, concern remains for Ramesh’s brother, also named Ajay, who was reportedly on the flight but remains unaccounted for.
Social media footage has emerged showing Ramesh walking toward an ambulance amid thick smoke rising near the crash site. Indian media outlets have verified his identity through his boarding pass, corroborating his seat number and presence on the flight.
Born in India and residing in the UK for several years, Ramesh is currently receiving medical care, according to Commissioner Malik.
The Boeing 787-8 slammed into a residential building occupied by medical professionals moments after takeoff. Among the 265 passengers on board were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.
In addition to the confirmed fatalities, 41 individuals are reported to be receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities continue ongoing recovery and investigation efforts as the nation grapples with one of its deadliest air disasters in recent memory.
