Aston Villa deepened Manchester City’s struggles with a 2-1 victory on Saturday, thanks to goals from Jhon Durán and former City forward Morgan Rogers.
The win propelled Villa to fifth place in the Premier League standings, while the defending champions slipped to sixth, marking their ninth defeat in 12 matches across all competitions. City’s precarious form could see them drop as low as ninth by the end of the weekend, with just one victory from their last dozen outings.
Despite the poor run, City manager Pep Guardiola remains hopeful. “It can come, it can not come. It depends on us,” he told the BBC, highlighting the team’s injury woes, with only one fit central defender. “We’ll try again next game; it’s another opportunity.”
Villa’s victory was further cemented by Jhon Durán, who continues to impress as a starter. The former super-sub has now scored in all three of his consecutive league starts, although a second goal was disallowed for offside.
The result underscores Villa’s resurgence and Man City’s challenges as they navigate a challenging phase in their title defense.
