Mali Charges Ex-PM With Undermining the State

Bamako, MaliThe Malian authorities have charged former Prime Minister Moussa Mara with actions deemed damaging to the credibility of the state, following comments he made on social media.

The charge stems from a statement posted by Mara on July 4 via X (formerly Twitter), in which he expressed solidarity with political detainees, describing them as “prisoners of conscience.” The post followed a visit he made to a detention facility holding opposition figures.

In a statement released by the national cybercrime unit, officials confirmed that Mara was detained and interrogated for a second time regarding the post, which authorities allege undermines public confidence in the government.

Mara, who briefly served as prime minister nearly a decade ago, has recently become a vocal critic of Mali’s military rulers. His actions have drawn increased scrutiny since the junta—now in control following successive coups in 2020 and 2021—banned political parties in May 2025 amid rare public protests.

In the controversial post, Mara noted that his visits aimed to ensure that “the flame of hope never fades” for those incarcerated.

Observers have raised concerns over the shrinking civic space in Mali, as the government continues to suppress dissent.
