Abuja, Nigeria — Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), following the conclusion of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s tenure.
The transition was officially announced at the recent ECOWAS Summit, held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where heads of state and key stakeholders convened to evaluate the bloc’s trajectory and reinforce their collective commitment to regional advancement.
President Tinubu, who has led the regional body over the past two years, was applauded for championing initiatives aimed at strengthening economic ties, enhancing regional security, and advocating for the restoration of democratic governance in member nations grappling with political instability.
In accepting the role, President Bio expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and affirmed his dedication to building on the foundation laid by his predecessor. He emphasized the importance of unity, development, and stability across West Africa.
The ECOWAS leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment, as the bloc seeks to navigate complex political and economic dynamics while upholding the principles of democracy and cooperation.
